Not everyone is likely aware of the Palace of the Institute of Physics and Chemistry at Vytautas Magnus University. It was a remarkable interwar building in Kaunas. During World War II, the palace was destroyed in an explosion. The goal of this project was to use historical sources to create a digital 3D model of the palace and place it in approximately the same location where it once stood, with the help of virtual reality.
The sources used to create the model were taken from various archives and included architectural drawings and historical photographs. The VMU Institute of Physics and Chemistry Palace once stood roughly in the same spot where Kaunas Jurgis Dobkevičius Progymnasium is located today. Panoramic photos of this location were taken for the project, and the digital model of the palace was composited into them.
