The Faculty of Informatics BIP initiative, “3D Modeling for Games,” was successfully implemented

In April 2024, the Faculty of Informatics started with the first BIP (Blended Intensive Programme), “3D Modeling for Games”. The program’s purpose was to familiarize students with the process of creating three-dimensional game models.

On the third Saturday of April, students gathered for a distance lecture session and learned how to prepare game characters and other elements of the 3D world program with the help of Blender. They also learned the possibilities of the free Godot game engine for game development.

The distance course students were divided into eight teams that created eight games of different genres, guided by their ideas, and began to develop the skills to help them make the game they came up with. During May, the team worked independently on their projects and, by the end of the month, until the initial versions.

In the second week of June, 22 students from four foreign universities (Czech Republic, France, Portugal, and Sweden) joined the BIP at KTU for the physical part of the program. This international collaboration was a unique opportunity for students to learn from each other and experience different perspectives.

During this week, the teams continued to improve their games during practical workshops. Students also played each other’s games and rated them, fostering a sense of camaraderie and healthy competition. This is how the teams that created the event in the Best Game Visual and Best Gameplay categories were selected and awarded.

BIP is intended to deepen knowledge in a specific direction and get to know the country and its culture. Therefore, the organizers included a visit to the Vytautas, the Great War Museum, the Old Town of Kaunas, and a tasting of traditional dishes in the program.

To become a good game developer, you first need to love playing games yourself. Therefore, to maintain the spirit of the player, during BIP, students could compete in the bowling alleys and sit down to board games. After summing up the results with the points from the workshop, the top five were chosen when each student played the games created by the team. They were awarded prizes with KTU attributes.

The BIP organizers, Kęstutis Jankauskas and Andrius Paulauskas, were delighted with the success and popularity of the program. All teams managed to create high-quality games under the given conditions, a testament to the students’ dedication and talent. The organizers were pleasantly surprised by the student’s enthusiasm and motivation, which bodes well for the future of the program.

Academic staff from Sweden and Portugal also came to gain experience in BIP organization. The Faculty of Informatics made valuable contacts with the academic staff. Depending on the program’s success, the initiative is planned to continue.
