Establishing Rules for a Digital Future: The Strategic Significance of KTU in ISO/IEC Activities

Important | 2026-10-20

When discussing the future of technology, the focus typically falls on artificial intelligence, digital identity, biometrics, or an increasingly interconnected digital ecosystem. However, the regulatory frameworks and standards governing these technologies are of equal significance. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) actively contributes to the formulation of these global norms.

By participating in international standardization processes, KTU experts assist in shaping the foundational requirements against which future technologies and information systems will be designed, evaluated, and certified.

Visit of International Experts

From September 28 to October 2, 2026, the KTU “Edu_Lab” center hosted the 57th meeting of the ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 27/WG 5 working group on “Identity management and privacy technologies.” The agenda addressed 71 distinct issues, encompassing digital identity, personal data protection, biometrics, digital identity wallets, age verification, data deletion, brain-computer interfaces, and privacy enhancement.

From Scientific Research to Global Standards

The involvement of KTU experts in ISO/IEC activities provides early insights into emerging international requirements and technological trajectories. This foresight informs the updating of study programs, initiates new scientific research, and drives the development of prospective projects.

Concurrently, research outcomes extend beyond academic dissemination to be integrated into international standards. A methodology, concept, or control mechanism incorporated into a standard attains global applicability, rendering standardization a critical vector for knowledge transfer and academic impact.

Tangible influence requires sustained institutional commitment, rigorous analysis of draft standards, and close collaboration with the Lithuanian Standards Department. The active representation of KTU within the Lithuanian national delegation for ISO/IEC standardization represents an unquestionable strategic investment in the digital future of both the University and Lithuania.
